The Illumination Project #1

Illumination Project #1 "Dividing The Playa"

5' x 200' double sided painting/sculpture with canvas and steel.
Black Rock Desert NV., 1996.

The Illumination Project #1 lived for 72 hours, a dividing line in the vast emptiness of the Black Rock Desert. During the day, the painting could be seen blowing in the wind like a liquid wave floating above the dry ground. One inch pieces of steel attached to the bottom of the painting in groups of three, gave an odd metallic sound as the soft cloth danced in the air. At night the painting was lit by hundreds of small lights that would writhe and pulse from the movement of the fabric.
